Strong kids are built, not born.

The Evoke Warriors Youth Wrestling Club teaches kids to work hard, listen well, and get back up when they get knocked down. Year-round training — new season starts this September. No experience needed, just a kid who's ready to try.

Period 1Why Wrestling

It's not about making tough kids.
It's about making capable ones.

Wrestling is one of the few sports a four-year-old can actually do — no ball skills required, no bench to sit on, no position to hide in. Every kid is on the mat, every practice. Here's what that builds:

+2 TAKEDOWN

Discipline that sticks

Practice has a structure: line up, listen, drill, repeat. Kids learn to follow instructions and stay on task — and parents tell us it shows up at home and in the classroom first.

+1 ESCAPE

Real confidence

Not the participation-trophy kind. The kind that comes from doing something hard, getting a little better every week, and knowing it. A kid who's earned their confidence carries it everywhere.

+2 REVERSAL

Losing without falling apart

In wrestling there's nowhere to point the finger — you win or lose on your own effort. Kids learn to lose, shake hands, and come back Tuesday. That lesson alone is worth the whole program.

+3 NEAR FALL

Body control & coordination

Tumbling, balance, footwork, falling safely. Wrestling is the best base layer there is — kids who wrestle young pick up every other sport faster.

+2 TAKEDOWN

Fitness they don't notice

An hour of practice is an hour of full-body movement disguised as fun. No laps for the sake of laps — just kids too busy playing to realize how hard they're working.

+1 ESCAPE

A team that feels like family

Wrestlers push each other in practice and cheer for each other everywhere else. Your kid gets teammates, older kids to look up to, and a coach who knows their name.

Period 3Your Coach

Coach Devan

Coach Devan wrestled four years of varsity folkstyle, racking up over 100 career wins as a district champion and two-time conference runner-up at 189 lbs. He took third at the Michigan Freestyle state championships, made the Michigan national team, helped Team Michigan bring home a consolation team title at the 2013 Daytona Beach National Duals, and won his opening-round match at the Fargo national championships. He went on to study sport performance at Eastern Michigan University, became a certified personal trainer, and served as an assistant coach for Springfield High School wrestling. And he still competes — most recently taking Greco-Roman gold and freestyle silver at the 2025 Alabama State Games.

Ref's TableQuestions

The stuff every parent asks

Is wrestling safe for a 4-year-old?

At this age it's not what you're picturing. Practice for the youngest group is movement, balance, tumbling, and learning to fall safely — on padded mats, with a coach right there. Wrestling has one of the lower injury rates among youth contact sports precisely because kids are taught body control from day one.

My kid has never wrestled. Is that okay?

That's the point. Nobody's born knowing how to wrestle — every kid in the program started at zero. Brand new is the normal way to show up.

What's the commitment? What if it's not for us?

Dues are month-to-month, year-round — no season-long contract. If you need to step away, just let Coach Devan know by text, email, or in person. One thing to plan around: there are no makeup sessions for missed practices.

Do kids have to compete in tournaments?

Competing is the goal, but nobody gets thrown in early. Coach Devan typically wants a kid to have 3–6 months of training before he'll even consider their first tournament — they step on the mat ready.

What does my kid need to practice?

Wrestling shoes, headgear, and a water bottle; a mouthpiece is optional. Every wrestler also needs a USA Wrestling membership to be eligible to practice — you can grab it through the club's registration link in the signup steps below. And the first team shirt is on us.

Girls too?

Absolutely. Girls wrestling is the fastest-growing high school sport in the country, and girls train right alongside the boys at this age.
